SIIA Media Outreach Campaign Update

SIIA Continues to Raise the Profile of the Self-Insurance Industry Nationwide

March 7, 2017 -- This winter, SIIA's media campaign has continued to bring national attention to issues facing the self-insurance marketplace.

On November 17, SIIA President and CEO Mike Ferguson was featured in a piece published by insurance trade journal LifeHealthPro entitled "Self-insured plan group prepares to prepare for Trump." This news website is a major resource for life and health insurance advisors and reaches nearly 620,000 readers a month.

That same day, Captive Insurance Times covered a letter that SIIA's Ryan Work sent to the IRS about regulation of captive insurers. Captive Insurance Times reported on another letter that SIIA sent to the IRS on January 31.

On November 25, Ferguson was interviewed for a story in the Pacific Coast Business Times, a business journal based in Southern California. In the piece, he discussed possible changes to self-insurance in the Trump era, as well as the uncertain future of Obamacare.

In December, an article written by Ferguson entitled "Self-insuring may help with rising health costs," was featured as a guest column in Vegas Inc., a business publication that's part of the Las Vegas Sun network and draws over 160,000 readers per month.

On January 17, SIIA was featured in "Self-insurance can save companies money on health benefits," an article published by the Houston Chronicle. The Houston Chronicle is among the biggest daily newspapers in the country, with a print circulation of nearly 250,000 and over 16 million web visitors per month.

On January 23, an op-ed by SIIA member Bob Tenney was featured in The Buffalo News. The piece encouraged New York state legislators to continue to allow mid-sized businesses like the one he runs to purchase stop-loss coverage. The Buffalo News is the largest publication in upstate New York, with a print circulation of over 121,000 and online viewership over 1.5 million.

Later in January, Ferguson appeared on the Barry Moltz Show, also known as Business Insanity Talk Radio. The show is part of the BlogTalkRadio network and website, which collectively reach nearly 4 million listeners and readers per month.

At the end of January, Ferguson also contributed commentary to a piece in Comstock's Business entitled "A Port in the Storm." Comstock's is a monthly business magazine, targeted at business professionals in and around California's capital.

On February 22, SIIA member Joe Holtz was quoted along with Ferguson in a Crain's New York Business piece entitled "A change for small biz could cost some employers their custom health plans." Crain's New York is among the most-read business publications in the state, with over 500,000 readers.

SIIA was again featured in LifeHealthPro in early March, in a piece covering SIIA board member Jay Ritchie's testimony about the importance of stop-loss insurance, which was part of a House Education and Workforce Committee hearing. SIIA's involvement in the hearing was also covered in an article on Captive.com in February.
