SIIA Media Outreach Campaign Update

Association Continues to be the Voice of Self-Insurance in Media Outlets Throughout the Country

August 7, 2017 -- SIIA's media outreach campaign continues to elevate discussion of self-insurance in some of the nation's top media outlets. This is a key ongoing association initiative designed to promote the growth of the self-insurance marketplace.

On June 1, online business publication Small Business Trends published "How Small Businesses Can Rise Above the Healthcare Debate - With Self-Insurance," with commentary from SIIA CEO Mike Ferguson. The piece provided background on the pros and cons of transitioning to self-insurance, and why more businesses are adopting the strategy. Small Business Trends boasts nearly 1.5 million unique visitors per month.

Ferguson also published an op-ed in three major-market newspapers on why self-insurance is a great strategy for business owners concerned about instability in the fully insured market. Investor's Business Daily published the piece first, on June 30. IBD has print readership of over 101,000 and 2.15 million unique online visitors monthly.

The East Bay Times, in northern California, published the op-ed on July 10. The Times is a top-50 daily newspaper, with readership of nearly 148,000. The Arizona Republic, in Phoenix, printed Mike's piece on July 28. The Arizona Republic is a top-50 daily newspaper and the largest publication in Arizona, with circulation of over 188,000.

On August 1, the Philadelphia Inquirer published an op-ed by SIIA member Matthew Kirk, president of the Benecon Group, Inc., on the federal Self-Insurance Protection Act. The Inquirer is the biggest newspaper in Pennsylvania and a top-15 publication nationally, with print circulation of over 227,000 and nearly 1.1 million unique online readers monthly.

On August 2, SIIA was featured in "Obamacare? Trumpcare? What business owners need to know," by syndicated columnist Gene Marks. The article encouraged small business owners to consider switching to self-insurance. The piece was published by the FOX Business Channel's website, which boasts nearly 11 million unique visitors per month. It then ran in the "Money" section of MSN News, which has more than 250,000 unique online readers monthly.

Ferguson also took to the radio airwaves last week. On August 3, "The Ron Jolly Show," out of Traverse City, Michigan, and the nationally syndicated "Made in America," with Neal Asbury, had Mike on to discuss self-insurance and the national debate over health reform.
