SIIA Media Outreach Campaign Update

Association Tells the Self-Insurance Story to an Audience of Millions

October 27, 2017 – SIIA continues to leverage its ongoing media outreach campaign to deliver positive message about self-insurance throughout the country. The following are the most recent highlights, with links to the referenced media placements provided below.

On August 8, SIIA CEO Mike Ferguson and association member Scott Wellman were featured in an article published by the Portland Press-Herald in Maine on the growing prevalence of self-insurance. The Press-Herald is the second-largest daily newspaper in Maine, with print circulation of nearly 38,000 and online readership of 2.1 million unique visitors per month.

On August 19, the Green Bay Press-Gazette in Wisconsin published an op-ed by Ferguson detailing why Wisconsin's decision not to self-fund its health plan for state employees this year could cost taxpayers millions of dollars. The Press-Gazette has more than 31,000 readers in print and almost 319,000 unique visitors per month online.

This Press-Gazette op-ed was then re-published by 36 additional daily newspapers that are part of the USA TODAY network. Highlights included hits in the flagship USA TODAY, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Indianapolis Star, the Nashville Tennessean, the Detroit Free Press, the Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal, and the Cincinnati Enquirer. These hits rolled in between August 19 and September 22.

All told, this op-ed reached 2.5 million people in print and up to 80.6 million people online – an amazing result by any measure.

SIIA is also working to promote passage of the Self-Insurance Protection Act (SIPA) with op-eds in key states explaining why the bill would benefit their residents.

The first SIIA member to weigh in on the issue was Matthew Kirk, president of the Benecon Group, Inc., in Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia Inquirer, a top-15 publication nationally with print circulation of over 227,000 and nearly 1.1 million unique online readers monthly, published his piece on August 1.

SIIA's next target was Virginia. Member Karin Flagle of Blue Ridge Insurance Services in Harrisonburg, Va., published her op-ed on SIPA in the Norfolk (Va.) Virginian-Pilot, the state's largest newspaper. The Virginian-Pilot has more than 99,000 readers in print and nearly 1.5 million unique visitors per month online.

SIIA will soon begin similar efforts to publish op-eds advocating for passage of SIPA in Colorado, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Connecticut. Watch for additional updates in the coming weeks and months.
